April 2, 2008 -- THE apartment listing promised a renovated one-bedroom on a corner of Avenue C. But the broker, who was 20 minutes late, actually had the keys to an apartment on the corner of Avenue D - a far less appealing address. For just about anyone who's ever navigated the wilds of the New York rental system, this scenario is all too familiar.

But it's just this kind of bait-and-switch shadiness that nyrentclub.com hopes to battle. Launched March 1, the site allows users to rate and recommend brokers citywide. A broker needs a minimum of three positive recommendations to be listed on the site at all.

"There are three big problems with brokers in New York City," says Mathew Day, the founder of nyrentclub. "They charge too much money, they have a terrible reputation, and they're known for wasting your time."

Day ,28, moved from Australia to New York two years ago and was shocked to learn how much brokers here charge for their services. (more ...)
